Originally from Indiana, Jedidiah Lachmann has lived in California, New York, and Auckland, New Zealand before settling in Nashville. He’s a multi-instrumentalist with experience playing a variety of genres. Over the years he’s played with many different artists including Eisley, Halfnoise, Leeland, Abandon, Seabird, Cole Taylor, Lainey Wilson, Brady Toops, and others. Jedidiah was a part of a band called The Ember Days for six years and recorded two albums and two EPs as part of that group. Currently he splits his time between producing in Nashville and touring with several different artists.
We chatted with him about how he’s using the Prophet Rev2.
Is this your first DSI product? If not, what other DSI products are in your setup?
“I also had one of the original yellow Mophos that I used for years. I ended up selling it but I really want to get that exact synth again. It’s so compact and small and it’s perfect for throwing in a bag and flying with.“
What made you choose the Prophet Rev2?
“There’s nothing like the sound of a Prophet, I had wanted one for years and had used them in the studio on a couple records I had been a part of. I hope to get a Prophet-6 as well.“
How are you using it?
“I use this synth every day in my productions, for sessions, and on the road. I’ll be using it on tour this fall with a band I’m playing with, Vesperteen. This fall, I’ll be experimenting with using a pedalboard with a bunch of effects in conjunction with this board.”
What’s one of your favorite things about it?
“I just love the sounds I can come up with instantly. There isn’t any other synth out there that sounds like this. I also love using tempo-based effects and modulations, as well as the sequencer. I run the clock in Slave mode to Ableton to sync up with the click. It’s so seamless.“
What does it give you that other instruments don’t?
“For me I think it’s the versatility of the Rev2 that really sells it for me, I can have rich pad sounds, amazing leads, and even bass sounds. The built-in effects sound amazing. It’s just very flexible for a lot of situations I’m in where I can only bring one analog synth. There are a lot of companies making analog synths now, but clearly companies like Dave Smith, Moog, and Roland are the standards for a reason. Dave Smith’s synths fit my style of playing, the gigs I have, and the music I create.”
Any interesting tricks or techniques you’d like to share?
“Play around with the auxiliary envelope to create some really dope sounds. As an example, I use it to automatically pitch-shift the oscillator frequencies up one full octave after a note is hit. That creates a really trippy rising pad sound that you year on some modern hip hop and r&b records.”
