Dan Haigh

Dan Haigh is an English musician, film director, video game designer, writer and visual effects artist. He is best known as co-founder of synth wave band, GUNSHIP, and as the bass player in the English alternative rock band Fightstar.

We chatted with Dan about how he’s using the Prophet 12.

Dan, what made you choose the Prophet 12?

“I was looking for the mother of all poly synths.”

How are you using it?

“The Prophet 12 is amazingly versatile. It is literally on every single track on the first GUNSHIP record. I had originally bought a Juno 106 for both classic 80s-esque mellow and percussive pads. But he Juno hasn’t been turned on again since the Prophet 12 arrived! I also use the Prophet 12 for a lot of arps and aggressive bass parts. A good example can be found in our track Shadow Fury, from 2:20 onwards. The Prophet 12 is doing the mellow sequence and also delivering the monster bass riff at 2:32. It can do almost everything, and well.”

What’s one of your favorite things about it?

“Having a double-layered patch, each with the arpeggiator enabled but each arp set to a different clock division, arp mode, and octave range. If you chuck that through a big reverb with some delay… instant bliss.”

What does it give you that other synths might not?

“To me the Prophet 12 is a genuine ‘instrument’ and by that I mean it has its own distinct sonic character. But also, the way you physically interact with it significantly impacts the end result. The routine usually goes: I turn on the Prophet 12 with a part or at least an idea of what I’d like to program and start recording. But nine times out of ten, the process of interacting with it will yield an unexpected result which is almost always more interesting than the original intention. The interface is intuitive, but it also promotes discovery. Also, the Character section is pretty handy for going to weird, extreme places fast.

Any interesting Prophet 12 tricks or techniques you’d like to share?

“I’ve recently been experimenting with the Prophet 12 as a complex drone generation machine. The possible modulation routings are pretty limitless. I can get lost for hours with a chord latched on Hold and all manner of super slow LFO’s modulating everything, while having other LFO’s modulating the first LFO’s influences and so on. I’m actually listening to a patch right now and it sounds like pure evil is dripping from the Genelecs. Both the Prophet 12 and the Prophet-6 are major cornerstones of the GUNSHIP sound.
