Aidan Carroll is an international touring artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He has toured and performed with such artists as Lisa Fischer, Melody Gardot, Fred Hersch, Donald Fagen, Warren Haynes, and Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds. As a NYC-based musician, Carroll is a top call for his exceptional bass playing and is quickly becoming known for his diverse work in the studio as a keyboardist, producer, and songwriter. Carroll has recently recorded with Omar Hakim, Lion Babe, Zhu, Kingdom, and done remixes for Anna Wise, Madison McFerrin, Denitia & Sene, and Tribe Called Quest. Aidan is currently at work on his second album which features him on all instruments, production, and vocals.
We chatted with him about how he’s using the Prophet-6.
Is this your first DSI product? If not, what other DSI products are in your setup?
“The Prophet-6 module was my first DSI product. The Tempest was my second.“
What made you choose the Prophet-6?
“The sound! After deciding to get into music production more seriously, I’ve been exploring different synths and the Prophet-6 honestly just sounded better to me than other modern synths. I absolutely love the sonic qualities.“
How are you using it?
“I mostly use it for home recording and producing. But I have also used it live for a solo show that I do. I love to use it for pads, bass sounds, leads, and arps.”
What’s are your favorite things about it?
“The onboard effects and the aftertouch.“
What does it give you that other instruments don’t?
“A modern analog synth that actually sounds and feels like one! Not a toy, not a game. It stands up to any vintage synth.”
Any interesting tricks or techniques you’d like to share?
“One of my favorite things when I’m in a creative rut is to find a sound I like, turn on the sequencer, play a few notes, and let that sequence run while I really explore the filters, modulation, various functions, and effects of the Prophet. If you record your whole performance of this sequence then you will have more than enough to find some loops or create song structure from. I also feel this is a great way to learn the synth because you don’t have to be playing while doing this. Another technique I dig is using the LFO knob for a thick wavering vibe to a sound as opposed to using, say, the mod wheel on a keyboard.”
